Study abroad disadvantages and difficulties

One of the few disadvantages of study abroad programs is that students participating would not be able to see their friends and family for three to four months. Some college students may feel as though this alone is too big of a sacrifice. However, there are plenty of opportunities for students to meet new people and make many friends while abroad. Adam Siddiq, author of “9 Wonderful Benefits of Traveling” mentions that “something magical happens in how people can show up more raw and real when they’re out of their conditioned environment and open to express themselves without feeling judged. That rawness and realness ends up inspiring others to be authentic, and that’s how you can become best friends with people when you’ve only known them for a few hours.” College students who opt for study abroad often go into the experience with an open mind and willingness to be authentic. This attitude will help students to attract authentic friends and create meaningful friendships while abroad that may even last a lifetime. Students who study abroad will live with host families during their study abroad. This opportunity itself will allow students to create deep, meaningful relationships with the families they are living with. All in all, the benefits of study abroad programs outweigh the disadvantages. Especially when compared to leisure travel, making study abroad programs the ideal travel option for college students.
